What is SB 2042?
In 1998 California Senate Bill 2042 was passed.  SB 2042 instituted various changes in teacher credentialing requirements and processes for obtaining a California clear teaching credential.  SB 2042 "requires that every candidate complete, during their first  two years of teaching, a program of beginning teacher support  and assessment that meets CTC standards, as specified."

What is BTSA?

The Beginning Teacher Support & Assessment Program (BTSA) is a state-approved teacher induction program.  The state requires all public school districts in the state of California to offer BTSA to first and second-year teachers.  Though charter schools have not been required to do so, Envision strives to support its new teachers as they begin and refine their professional practice as well as provide a means for Envision teachers to meet all state induction requirements.

Envision's New Teacher Support Program is a two-year program that provides a forum for ongoing learning, reflection, collaboration, support in implementation of the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP), and additional staff development for preliminary credentialed teachers.  Teachers are supported

as they examine their own practice and improve and implement differentiated instruction and learning.

How will I clear my credential?

Successful completion of a state-approved BTSA Induction Program is a means of attaining a Professional Clear Credential.  As of 2005, SB 2042 law requires that all new teachers (within first five years of teaching) complete a two-year teacher induction program of support and assessment in order to earn a California Professional Clear Credential.  The BTSA Induction Program is guided by Professional Induction Standards, the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP), and state-adopted academic content standards.

Who is eligible for induction?
• All first or second year teachers who have a preliminary teaching credential
• Teachers certified outside the state of California

How am I supported as a New Teacher?

All Participating Teachers (PTs) are matched with a Teacher Coach/Support Provider.  This person is an experienced professional who is either a practicing teacher or has recently stepped out of the classroom.  Coaches provide support in the following areas: formative observation and feedback, support in setting professional goals, developing an individual learning plan, reflective conversations about best practice, collaboration in planning and implementing instruction, and guidance in completing the BTSA Participating Teacher Portfolio.  All PTs meet with their Coaches a minimum of one hour per week.  Ideally, all Coaches are site-based.  All Coaches are Envision Schools employees.

What are the benefits of participating in the BTSA Induction Program?

You will receive weekly support, coaching and assistance from a skilled Coach/Support Provider.  Professional Development opportunities will focus on a variety of topics relevant to the context of teaching at Envision Schools.  Additionally, you will enroll in and complete online teacher induction courses.  You can tailor completion of these courses around your own schedule during each eight-week session.  All courses are paid for by Envision Schools and are required for meeting requirements for the Professional Clear teaching credential. Participation in the BTSA Induction Program will provide a supportive and collegial atmosphere as you reflect and improve upon your won  instructional practice and strategies for assessment.
